Photo by Tracy Allen/ISIphotos.com The Los Angeles Galaxy looked destined for another loss, another step in a worsening slide, before Omar Gonzalez stepped up and saved the day. No, Los Angeles didn't beat the Chicago Fire, but when Gonzalez headed home a last-minute equalizer, you couldn't blame the Galaxy for feeling like a victory was scored at a sold-out Toyota Park on Saturday afternoon. The draw was a devastating result for the Fire, which looked set to close ground in the playoff race with a victory after Collins John scored a would-be winner with a beautiful free kick goal in...
It turns out all of us were wrong after the World Cup. Things could get worse for France.
Photo by Jose L. Argueta/ISIphotos.com By AVI CREDITOR WASHINGTON - The Columbus Crew have won Major League Soccer's last two Supporters' Shields, and after trailing the league's pace-setter for much of the season, they are in prime position to try and claim that title for a third straight season. Guillermo Barros Schelotto took advantage of Bill Hamid's 23rd-minute howler, scoring the only goal of Columbus' 1-0 victory over D.C. United in front of 12,075 Saturday night. The victory, coupled with the Los Angeles Galaxy's 1-1 draw in Chicago, pulled the Crew (13-5-5) even with the Galaxy for most points in...
By AVI CREDITOR After the Los Angeles Galaxy scored a late equalizer to manage a point out of its match at Chicago on Saturday, the door is open for the Columbus Crew to pull even with the Galaxy in the chase for the Supporters' Shield. To do that, the Crew will need to defeat D.C. United in Washington for the second time in four days. Columbus outlasted D.C. in a physical, somewhat controversial U.S. Open Cup semifinal on Wednesday, with Guillermo Barros Schelotto's penalty kick in extra time being the difference. If the Crew can beat United, they'll be level...

With Brian McBride announcing his retirement from professional soccer at the end of the current MLS season there has been an outpouring of emotion from grateful U.S. national team fans who remember him for all his contributions to the game. This had me wondering just who most people would consider their favorite U.S. national team player ever. Is it McBride? How about Landon Donovan? Do people still have love for Tab Ramos or John Harkes? How about Clint Mathis? It's time for a poll. Who is your favorite U.S. men's national team player of all time? Remember, this isn't a...
photo by Greig Cowie/ISIphotos.com By FRANCO PANIZO Qualifiers for Euro 2012 began on Friday, and while some teams were hoping to build off what they had done at the World Cup, others were hoping to start over. England eased some memories of its bad World Cup showing by defeating Bulgaria, 4-0, to start its qualifying campaign. Jermaine Defoe put up a hat-trick and youngster Adam Johnson scored his first international goal at Wembley Stadium. It wasn't all good news for the Three Lions, as defender Michael Dawson turned his ankle and is expected to miss at least six weeks. Also...

By Michael Lewis - ROCHESTER, NY (Sep 3, 2010) US Soccer Players -- In this day and age of technological advances, if you are out of sight for more than 10 seconds, you probably are out of mind as well. By TRAVIS CLARK The first weekend of September is here, and there remains very little room for error as the playoff race continues to heat up. Kansas City faces a vital trip to Philadelphia as the Wizards continue to force themselves back into the playoff picture, while FC Dallas puts its unbeaten streak on the line at home against an undermanned Toronto FC. The Canadian side will be missing Dwayne De Rosario, Nana Attakora and Julian De Guzman thanks to international team commitments. International call-ups this weekend will leave an impact on nearly every game, putting the depth of several...
By TRAVIS CLARK Only one month of the USSF D-2 regular season remains, and it's last call for the bottom feeders to pull off a last-minute miracle. Crystal Palace Baltimore is one of those teams. Four points outside the last playoff spot, a trip to Carolina awaits this weekend, and a win for Baltimore is paramount (7:30p.m., Friday). Given the frustrating tendency of the Railhawks to lose games at home, now would be a good time for Baltimore to conjure up a strong performance. Etienne Barbara has had a solid season since joining Carolina prior to the start of the...

With J Hutcherson -- Seven games on Major League Soccer's holiday weekend, and fortunately the marquee match is on television. The Galaxy are at Chicago (4pm ET - TeleFutura) in a game that will give LA another opportunity to push past their run of questionable results and once again lock their grip on the top of the Western Conference. Sounds impressive, until you remember that in the first outing of their designated player improved squad...
